My Students

How about starting a new year by giving the best gifts: ones that can last for a lifetime? As you probably know, children who become successful readers in the primary grades go on to be more successful readers and learners. Better yet, discovering a love for books can last a lifetime.

I teach kindergarten at a suburban area in Southern California.

My school is not Title I, so we are very limited in terms of providing additional resources such as books at appropriate reading levels and fluency cards. Extra supporting materials such as these will provide a boost to move to the next reading level for my students. Although my students' interests are very diverse and their abilities range within a wide spectrum, one thing that they all have in common is a love of reading. They may express different thoughts about many things, but they all share the consensus that reading is fun. Their eyes will sparkle, especially when they hear the good news about having books at their reading level that will allow them to read independently and fluently. Furthermore, with the fluency practice cards, they will enhance their ability to read more quickly and accurately.

My Project

With the new books and fluency cards, my students will be able to enjoy reading at their level and successfully transition to the next level. These reading materials will give the students a wonderful opportunity to be able to choose books for themselves and feel confident reading. These fiction and nonfiction books will also be used for both guided reading instruction and independent reading and to help us expand our classroom library.

Every student in my classroom has the potential to become an independent and fluent reader.
