My Students

My second grade students have reached the age where they are very curious about the world around them, but my classroom has no globes!

I teach second grade in an urban school in New York.

Our student population is amazingly diverse: academically, ethnically, culturally, and economically. Watching young people from such differing backgrounds come together to create a cohesive and cooperative classroom community is always an inspiration to me.

My Project

Geography, reading, writing, and social studies - our "Where in the World is Flat Stanley?" project will touch on all of these. We'll read the Flat Stanley picture books, design our own Flat Stanleys, write letters and journals to accompany our Flat Stanleys, and send our Flat Stanleys to visit friends and relatives in different parts of the world. Most importantly, this project will give my students the opportunity to learn about several places around the world as we mark the Flat Stanleys' journeys on a globe.

My students are fascinated by maps and atlases.

I look forward to introducing globes into my classroom, as well. Along with our Flat Stanley project, these globes will be used to enhance my social studies curriculum throughout the year, and in the years ahead.
