Help Ms. D'Amato

I am a second grade teacher at a public school in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free lunch. This past week I embarked upon a new unit of study with my students, the seven continents. This topic was a huge success, and I even had a hard time wrapping up the various lessons so the class could go to lunch on time. My students are extremely interested in learning about the vast and beautiful habitats that exist around the world, such as rainforests, plains, and the Australian outback, as well as the animals that inhabit such places. Once the class has a strong hold on the seven continents I plan to move on to a full unit on the Amazon, as my students have particular interest in that locale. I would love to have a globe in my classroom so my students can gain a better understanding of where the continents are, and where they themselves are in relation to the rest of the world. I am using a flat map right now, which is helpful, but it's difficult for the kids to envision the position of the continents on a sphere. Sometimes I hold up the map and curve it in to try to explain, but it's not the same as being able to see things on a globe. I'd like to provide my students with the tools they need in order to gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. In addition to this I would like to request cash registers, so my students may practice counting money and making change in an engaging manner. Those are two math skills that must be mastered in the second grade in order for students to be prepared to move on to the next grade level. I would also like to request some basic art materials for my students, as we barely have any supplies right now. My students are very interested in arts & crafts, and I would like to provide them with the tools they need to creatively express themselves.
