My Students

My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and situations. From heart breaking stories of hard family lives and situations no teenager should be subjected to to families that instantly support my request for something as simple as Kleenex with several boxes and a Thank you note. I teach students who are reading at a 1st grade reading level to those that could do an Advanced Placement class next year.

In spite of this, I have found ways to get my students excited about Social Studies--working on geography, history, economics, and civics in ways that connect to their lives.

We have a high level of school pride and are embarking on a new learning model; combining standards based grading with proficiency based lessons. Our hope is to have students able to work at their own pace through a variety of lessons and to show what they know in ways that work for them.

My Project

In a school where learning can happen at their own pace and in their own time, the thing holding us back is resources. Having a class set of atlases will allow my students to work independently and in groups using different maps. Currently my classes share a set of 20 worn and torn books at least once a week. A class set will allow us more freedom in activities and let kids work at their own pace.

Imagine studying a map of the Battle of Yorktown or the concept of Manifest Destiny; for many students maps open these big ideas and important concepts up to them.

These atlases will help my students access historical maps of the United States. It will help them learn how things have changed and start to answer the question of why. They will look at graphs and charts and learn how to interpret information that isn't spelled out in words, sentences, and paragraphs. To help students be proficient in a wide variety of Geography standards, an atlas that has all this is a necessity.
