Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Ahhh...the copy machine dilemma of all teachers! Here's how it goes: when all of the machines are actually working (about 2-3 weeks of the year), we've already ran out of paper!! I teach a 3rd grade bilingual classroom in an urban, high poverty district. My 26 students are all English Language Learners, and we're all facing a paper drought!

Paper needs are always a top issue for urban teachers. Our kids need lots of extra enrichment since many of them come to school without the readiness level of other communities. Especially with English Language Learners, they need access to even more. Every year I have great ideas that die at the copy machine...either for total lack of paper or for lack of the right kind. Flashcards to be practiced at home last about 2 days on regular white copy paper, when I have enough to make them! Passages I would like to do as "shared reading" using transparencies for the modeling and a copy for each student don't always make it to the presentation. And parent notices and newsletters that don't stand out, usually end up shoved in the bottom of a backpack or mixed in with a pile of bills never getting read.

This proposal would help me bridge the gap between the meager supplies our district can afford and what I would like to be able to provide for my student's greatest access to learning. Colored card stock paper would be great for flashcards for students for math, reading and vocabulary lessons. The colored copy paper can help make parent letters and newsletters eye catching and more likely to be seen. An extra pack of transparencies would provide my students with 70-100 extra shared learning experiences using my overhead projector!

You can help put my great ideas back on life support by funding this project. Please don't let them die at the copy machine anymore!
