This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I remember what it was like to walk into a classroom that had all of the supplies and books teachers needed to support their students learning. How would you feel if you were a second grader who walked into a classroom the first day of school without the materials needed to learn? My students are facing a year of challenges because I can’t afford to buy the supplies they need.

We are a Title 1 school.

My students live in a culturally diverse and economically challenged area. Many of our families can barely afford to keep a roof over their heads. Students at my school often arrive to school hungry and tired! In today’s economy school districts are struggling to supply the basics such as paper, pencils, and crayons. I cannot afford to fill my classroom with supplies and I can’t ask for help from families that have nothing.

My Project

My students are 2nd graders. I am new to 2nd grade and when I opened the classroom door to set up my class, I found 3 intermediate level dictionaries that are falling apart and missing pages. My students need primary dictionaries that can be used without worrying about if the pages will fall out or not. Skills that 2nd graders are required to learn include identifying what a dictionary is and how to use it, using a dictionary to correct misspelled words, and alphabetizing a list of words to the second letter. Without dictionaries these skills will be impossible to teach.

Without your support my 2nd grade students will not have dictionaries to use.

Our school district has no money to supply classrooms properly. Our students' families are economically challenged and they can hardly afford their food and shelter. How can I ask them for supplies? These dictionaries will help my students learn and do well in school. Imagine the smiles on the faces of my 2nd graders when they receive brand new dictionaries. They’ve never had new books before!
