My Students

Do you feel frustrated when you can't find what you need? Well, this is a common occurrence in my classroom. We have so many books and supplies but no place to properly store them. Students forget where they put them and frustration sets in as they search for items needed for a lesson.

My students consist of a class of typical children mixed with several students that are autistic.

They are wonderful children who love to learn and work hard. My special needs students face daily challenges and struggles. Organizational skills are a deficit that they have to deal with all day long. Checklists and schedules are always very helpful but keeping track of their belongings continues to be a struggle for many of these students. The typical students are amazing role models to their peers. They are the best group of children who show empathy, compassion, and true nurturing that is uncommon for 8 year olds! However, they do it well! The benefits are obvious when we watch how ALL the children interact with each other. My class is in a public elementary Title I school in NY.

My Project

If our students had seat sacks to store their books and supplies, this would help them stay organized, ready to learn, and eliminate frustration and meltdowns when they can't find a book, a pencil, or any supply needed for the lesson. This may sound very simple, but for a child who is on the spectrum, sometimes it just takes one little thing (little to us, but not to them) to set them off. When they immediately find their books, they will be prepared physically and emotionally to learn. The great thing about my students is that they are bright, eager, and love to learn. Having seat sacks where they can keep their things and stay organized (which is an IEP goal for many) will truly impact their lives both academically and emotionally!

Although one may think "this is only a seat sack, how will that help a child?", it truly will. Organizational skills are one of the core deficits of children on the spectrum. I am positive that helping my students stay organized will impact their learning in the most positive way possible.
