My Students

The students I teach have physical, health, and cognitive disabilities. They use wheelchairs/walkers and other mobility equipment, have severe vision impairments, seizure disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, chromosomal disorders and other conditions. Our program is a Special Education transition program and all of our students have disabilities. Our students are learning the skills they need to be successful adults, including the skills needed to participate in social and recreational activities with peers.

We're an inner city public school with no PTA to raise funds for us to buy extra materials and equipment to meet the needs of our students.

The students who will use this equipment love adapted sports and gym activities. They need and enjoy physical exercise, and sports activities also give them opportunities to learn the value of teamwork, increase their social skills, and make lasting connections with peers.

However, we sorely need adapted PE equipment for these students to participate in soccer, basketball, floor hockey, softball, and a variety of other sports and games.

Please help us create an enriched, joyful gym experience for these young people!

My Project

When it's time for gym, it's grim.

Upon opening the equipment storage room we find deflated balls (and no pump to inflate them), floor hockey sticks (but no pucks or nets to accompany them), one softball tee and bat (and no matching balls to to hit) and bits and pieces of equipment that defy explanation.

Our list of requested materials includes a wide variety of equipment because we serve a wide variety of students! Each student's disability dictates what types of games and sports they can enjoy, and what types of equipment works best form them. We've asked for two scooters with seats that sit near the floor and are steered by pushing one's feet back and forth on a steering bar. These are for students whose arms and legs aren't up to the challenge of pedaling and steering an upright adapted bike. Basketball is a favorite activity, and the portable basketball arcade game will allow students to shoot hoops from wheelchairs or while seated if they have mobility/balance issues, low muscle tone, or other conditions that make traditional basketball hoops inaccessible. A ringing soccer ball will allow students with vision impairments to play soccer. A variety of velcro and easy-to-catch/throw ball and target games will be used by students who cannot throw or catch accurately. Floor hockey pucks, goal nets, tees, softballs, bases, and gloves will complement adapted sports equipment we already own but cannot use due to missing components. Finally, 8 sturdy plastic tubs will allow us to keep this equipment organized and stored in a manner that will allow us to use it for years to come.
