My Students

I currently work in a small school serving a large population of mixed ability students. Many of the students come from low income households and face challenges both in and out of the classroom. A large percentage of our population includes English language learners, as well as students with disabilities. Many students start fourth grade reading well below grade level. Aside from the obstacles they face, our kids are resilient and eager to learn.

Aside from the challenges the students face, they are resilient, and critical thinkers, who come to school each day attempting to put their best foot forward and become the best students and people they can be!

My Project

Student focus and engagement is essential to learning. As a special education teacher in an elementary classroom I have noticed several students struggle to focus due to over-stimulation. Many times our students tend to move, shake, tap and event scream as a way of releasing unused energy. Many times this leads to students and peers becoming distracted or deemed as "off task."

Offering students flexible seating options for carpet time, chair bands and fidget devices will allow them to refocus that energy into their classwork and experience greater success as students.

These devices will help students learn to better regulate their bodies and become more focused on classroom instruction.
