My Students

My students are all English language learners who have recently immigrated to the U.S. or have parents who have immigrated. They are fiercely proud of their multilingualism even though they sometimes struggle with academic English. Specifically in the domain of writing, they have difficulties. But they love reading and are always eager to show off what they have learned.

My Project

This project is to help my students read a remarkable graphic novel called "When Stars Are Scattered." This novel is about the refugee experience of coming to the United States. Most of my students are either immigrants or have parents who are immigrants and it is so important for them to understand that they are not alone in their experiences. We have an opportunity to show our children that America is a melting pot and they are an integral part of that. This project will provide books for all of my students.
