Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the honor and pleasure of being able to teach and live in the community where my students reside. My students are from low-income families that rely on the school for food and sometimes clothing for survival. I try to bridge that gap. My students mean the world to me, all 12 of them.

I teach self-contained for grades 4 and 5.

Most of my students are boys. More times than not, my students are labeled and pushed aside which is unfair because they are so smart and unique. I tell them to love being who they are. It is okay to be different. Everyone doesn’t learn the same way and that their superpowers are created just for them. That’s what makes them who they are.

In our school community, we teach our students to be lifelong learners who demonstrate grit and take academic risks in pursuit of excellence in everything that they do. My students are courageous risk takers and lifelong learners who can achieve anything they set their eyes upon, one "superpower" at a time.

My Project

Each day, following my direct instruction, my students are given at least 15-20 minutes to read independently while I meet with small groups or hold individual learning conferences to help my students meet their reading goals. During this time, each student has a self-selected bag of books on their level that they can read.

The purpose of this time is to give students the opportunity to immerse themselves in high quality, high interest texts and to build their understanding and enjoyment of books by applying the strategies I have taught them within their chosen books.

In order for this model to be effective, students need many, many books to get excited about and select from each week, within a range of genres throughout the school year. My goal is to nurture life-long readers by helping my students develop habits that will support their enjoyment and understanding of a range of texts as their skill levels grow.
