When Literature Meets Art

Help me give my students One will notice that the majority of the items I am requesting pertain to creation via art. Although I teach English, I understand the value of students expressing their ideas artistically.

My Project

I have requested many art supplies for my English classroom. Why? Well, just as literature and history are closely tied, so is art. In our upcoming unit on the Harlem Renaissance, students will not only be exposed to the literature and music of this pivotal period in American history, but they will also examine how American culture was reflected in the visual arts of this time period.

After reading Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, a Harlem Renaissance pioneer, I would like students to examine visual artists from this period to create art visuals representing themes, characters, events, and/ or symbols found in this beautifully -written novel.
