Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 25 of the most amazing fourth-grade students who are a dynamic mixture of general education, special education, and ENL students. One thing that makes our school unique is that we are a universal poverty school, so all students are entitled to free meals. We have breakfast in the class, lunch, and many students stay after school so they can have dinner as well. We are in a very rough neighborhood, but my kiddos don't give up!

I chose in person learning, and then soon went to blended since I only had 11 kids sign up for in person.

After some ups and downs, we have settled on two formats, In-Person only and Remote Only. I have my "at capacity" classroom and we are trying really hard to have the most "normal" year we can. We have had more starts and stops and ups and downs than any year I have ever taught. It isn't easy! It isn't perfect! But it is what teaching is like in 2021! #Teacherlife

My Project

This school year has been more challenging than any in my 24 year history. I am an in-person teacher who has spent more time REMOTE than in person due to shutdowns by the district, or school shutdowns due to covid outbreaks.

One thing that has been a constant for me and my kiddos is reading good books!

This is something you can do in person, or remotely over Zoom! We have read The Tiger Rising, Dear Mr. Henshaw, The One and Only Ivan, and we are about to start The London Eye Mystery.

One thing I do different this year is I make sure that each day the kiddos leave, they take their class novel, their math book, and their journals with them, even if we are not using them for homework - JUST IN CASE! That is how quickly we go from In-person to remote. It can be an email.

I need more books that I can send home and "let go" and know that they might not come back, they might not be in good condition, I might need to replace them. As a career educator, this is HARD! But times are changing, so I need to change too!
