This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach all subjects to second graders at an inner city, high poverty school, where most students are below grade level, but can be inspired with the proper materials and support.
I have 22 students and 1 desktop computer, with which I am supposed to integrate technology into my instruction, individualize instruction to meet student needs, and create a college going culture. I find this to be virtually impossible. Ideally, students should have an opportunity to engage with technology on a daily basis. With 1 computer, which is over 10 years old, students are blessed if they are able to use it once a week for 15 minutes each. During their 15 minutes, these students often are the envy of their peers, who are distracted, because they want to work with the technology.
My students need 6 laptop computers. These laptop computers will allow my students to engage with technology on a daily basis, 2 to a computer at a time, while I individualize instruction for others in a small group. Students will be able to partner, and work with software, and Internet programs that will strengthen their skills, help them become more confident in their work, and learn to work as a team. Students will use these laptops as a motivation piece to produce and complete assignments. The flexibility of the laptop also allows the students to find a space in which they are comfortable working, which is important for producing a good work product.
Your help will ensure that my students are engaged with the technology that is important for their future success in life, in college, and at work. This donation will enable me to engage those students who do not learn in the traditional way, with paper and pencil work, and who are greatly motivated to learn and complete assignments, through the use of a computer. Most of my students do not have access to computers at home. Therefore, if they are not taught the technology at school, and given an opportunity to use it, they remain another step behind their peers who are afforded the opportunity.
