Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our basketball program provides academic, social and athletic support for the student-athletes on the team. The need we have is to supplement our schedule to include important high profile tournaments that they can get better, bond, and get exposure to college.
My school is a Title I school with almost all of my students qualifying for free lunch.
Many of my student-athletes struggle academically; therefore, every weekday from September through June, my students come to study hall from 3-4pm and then we head out to practice or play games.
My students are primarily from immigrant families from the Dominican Republic. Almost all of them qualify for free lunch and many are English Language Learners. My students care a lot about getting to college and starting a career that can support their families. They are passionate about baseball and it is a tremendous motivator for them both in school and on the field.
My school is an unscreened public school in Washington Heights. We have about 350 students in our High School. Our school is considered to be one of the top unscreened High Schools in New York city. That is, our students do not have to take a test or any other entrance requirement to be enrolled here, they simply apply.
My Project
Our team has a 14 game league schedule, but that is not enough to play competitively, to attract the attention of college coaches, and is not enough to really have a deep, meaningful experience. These extra games, tournaments and camps are not only expensive, but they cost extra money, and the school budget does not have extra funds to provide these opportunities. This project will provide all of these fees for our student-athletes.
Basketball is a very important part of the lives of my students.
Many have real talent, and the opportunity to have basketball help them get into college, potentially with scholarships. This extra exposures and team building can make a great difference in where the team, and the students go, and what they can achieve.
