This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you heard a woodpecker? Can you recall your surprise when you first heard a lion roar? New sounds introduce us to a new world of possibilities and expand our ways of thinking. Music education is all about experimenting with and discovering new sounds.

I'm fortunate to work with about 470 brilliant, elementary students on a daily basis.

We go to a large urban school in a fairly low-income neighborhood. The vast majority of my students come from families where English is not their main medium for communication and yet they strive to excel in math and reading and many are fluent in both languages. Though they come from a low SES background, they are innovative and creative, not letting boundaries stop them. Music gives my students an outlet to create and innovate and takes hold of their attention. Their eyes light up when they can take music making into their own hands and create something absolutely new.

My Project

My students need a variety of percussion instruments to compliment our classroom lessons and allow for new projects. These instruments would allow my students to try out different sounds from around the world and create new patterns and textures. The addition of these resources would give us the chance to try out new and innovate projects and also reinvigorate older lessons. Many of these instruments are standard in music classrooms around the country (and even this city), but my budget does not allow me to purchase the instruments that others might take for granted. Having these resources at our disposal would create a world of new possibilities and opportunities.

I want all of my students to have an equal chance at making a unique creation and honing their skills.

I don't want my students' creativity or passion to be squelched just because they don't have the resources available to them. The addition of these instruments would help students to hear new, different sounds and create rhythm patterns and compositions that are different from what they've previously imagined.
