Who wants to hear a buzzing sound when trying to concentrate on learning a skill on the computer? Not the students at my school. They enjoy using the computer lab to reinforce what they have learned in the classroom, but now that the headphones are buzzing, it's not as much an enjoyable experience.
The boys and girls at my school are hard working students who don't necessarily get the same opportunities afforded to other students in our state due to their economic situation.
We are fortunate to have a computer lab that they can use. They all use the lab at least once a week to "play" games that reinforce concepts they are learning in their classrooms. For many of these students, the only experience with a computer they get is at school, so I would like for it to be a positive experience as well as an educational one.
My Project
The computer lab at our school was equipped with the latest and greatest technology at the time it was built ... ten years ago. You can imagine in that time how the equipment in the lab has seen its fair share of wear and tear. This is especially true of the the headphones. Over 400 students use the headphones each week while coming to the lab, so it really is amazing that the headphones have lasted as long as they have. However, now that the headphones are starting to buzz, they are no longer proving to be helpful. The only alternatives are for the students to not use the headphones and either disturb others with the sound from their computer speakers or to not have sound at all. The activities that the students complete are much more effective with sound but only if that sound is not competing with sound from other computers. It would be a shame if our students could not reap the benefits of a computer lab just because of a lack of working headphones.
By supplying our school with headphones for the lab, you will be helping our students to reap the FULL benefits of the technology that is available to them at school, technology that they may only get to experience at school.
And if the previous set of headphones is any indication, your donation could have a lasting impact on the students at my school ten years from now. Now that's an investment in the future!
