PS116Q, is located in an impoverished section of Jamaica, Queens, New York. The school population of 816 students rarely have an enthusiasm like the one I am seeing right now. My students have expressed an interest in adding a cooking segment to our School News Video Time. We are putting together a demo video to present to our Principal as a weekly club activity. The students have made cardboard video equipment, we have a room where we will broadcast from, and all scripts are written for the student anchors, by the student writers. We actually have had a good handle on this project. Adding a cooking segment to our video will increase the length and we feel that it will be a great resource for our math classes. By measuring, mixing, and actually preparing some rolls, pizza dough,or quesedilla's the students will be cooking to learn. To pull this venture together, we will need to have a microwave/convection oven. This type of microwave will serve as an oven for baking also. We are very fortunate that we will be able to use the Teacher's Center in our school to have our remote broadcasts. My students involved in the broadcast club are both males and females. They range in age from 8 to 12 and they are rather delightful to be around on Friday afternoons. If we can expand this cooking portion of our broadcast, we would like to share some of our recipes with the Parents at an evening PTA meeting. We have utensils from a previous program and some of the students have turned in their favorite recipes. We will expand on this cooking theme and produce My Favorite Recipe Book to be shared throughout the school. This venture will allow my students to read, write, do math, publish, taste and SHARE! Thank you for taking the time to read some of our thoughts.
