Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Give us the tools to fight disease! My international group of students are studying microbes, but right now we have only those bacteria we can find on doorknobs and on walls. We need kits of known non-pathogenic bacteria to examine how diseases can be stopped.

My students are all recent immigrants for whom English is a second or third language.

They have come to the United States for many reasons: Some for economic opportunity, some to escape oppression, and some have come following family members after long separations. All of them are seeking a better life and a great education. Since we have such a diversity of experiences, native languages, and experience in English, our educational mission finds creative ways to reach ALL learners. I love teaching science because the hands-nature of DOING experiments can be a basis for teaching language, it gets otherwise reluctant students talking, and it connects to many of their lives in very tangible ways. Disease and sanitation are issues that impacted many of my students in their home countries, and medicine is a career that interests many of them. Thus one of my favorite projects to do with students is the study of bacteria.

My Project

I have requested several kits for studying bacteria - their morphology and inhibition of bacterial growth. With these kits students can ask and implement many different experiments of their own design. By having several different species of non-pathogenic bacteria to work with, students can explore the diversity of life and how some solutions to problems work only some of the time. With the different kits, we can test everything from detergents to chili extracts on slowing bacterial growth. The practice they get as scientists will set them on a path to become well-informed citizens, or scientists should they choose. The results will be authentically their own. Who knows what kinds of questions this will lead my students to ask? They may be inspired to do an experiment that's never been tried before.

It is so important we have materials such as these for our projects.

Without them, we always find a way to make do with the resources we have at hand, but the product is never as rich or nuanced as it could be. These kits will allow us to do experiments we only read about or see on TV. The original research we will do will train the next generation of scientists. Your donation may set them on the path of personal success in the pursuit of their own American Dream.
