My Students

My classroom consists of 20 pre-kindergarteners. Several students have specials needs and the majority are English Language Learners with various backgrounds from different countries.

Even with such a diverse group they are still students who are naturally curious and love to explore!

Many students are new to the country and this may also be their first time in a school setting. In addition, it is possible that many have not had previous experience with classroom materials outside of basic toys and technology. Please help me to provide them with the resources that will create new, exciting experiences for them where they can make real-world connections and be proud of their accomplishments.

My Project

I may have 20 four year old students in my classroom but they are anything but your average prekindergartners. We are a class of cultures! The majority of my students are English Language Learners and enter the classroom in September knowing only their home language. Even if students come from the same region in their country, they might speak different dialects. We can have as little as 5 languages in one class!

To help students feel comfortable entering school using their home language, teach English vocabulary, and to assist teachers in communicating with each student, I need to find resources that utilize the same language they speak.

My students were recently gifted 4 Bilingual Dictionaries thanks to our amazing Donors from DonorsChoose.org. Each dictionary is kid-friendly, with pictures and vocabulary that one would learn at 4 years old, such as animals, things you find at school, fruits and vegetables, vehicles, etc. Under each picture is the label in English and the designated language. We now have dictionaries in Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, and Arabic. Along with these dictionaries is supposed to be a Talking Pen. When the pen touches a picture, a microphone on top says the word in both English and the language of the dictionary, to be heard by both the student and teacher. Teachers and students are able to use the pens as a way to communicate by pointing the pen at a picture of what they need or want to say. Students can repeat the words they hear from the pen and record their own voices as a fun way to practice both English and a new foreign language! Without these pens, we are unable to read or properly say new words! Imagine a 4 year old that knows 4 languages!
