Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in a New York City Public School, where the majority of the population is of Hispanic origin. They are English Language Learners, and English is their second language. Becoming English proficient is their goal, and mine is to have them achieve it. One of the things that I love about my students every year is the enthusiasm they come with and demonstrate in every step they take to becoming English proficient. The conquering smiles revealed at their ability to decode and/or read and understand very short stories to lengthy ones is something that brings great worth in self esteem, and asserts me in my daily practices throughout the year. It truly is a priceless picture and accomplishment. However, their ability to express themselves orally and in written form goes hand in hand with reading. Writing about their personal experiences and factual reporting is a yearly constant. This is where I come in as their facilitator. Searching for ideal teaching materials to implement fun, simple and useful practices throughout the day and year is exhausting and simultaneously rewarding. The amount out there in resources and materials is endless. However, this is my way of keeping abreast, and finding better implementations to better assist my ELL kids in becoming English proficient. This year, I found a workbook (Daily Language Practice, Grade 2), that does just this. Published by Weekly Reader - a leader in supporting State Standards with fun and practical uses in the classroom - pinpoints a sleuth of Language Arts skills: punctuation, grammar, spelling, vocabulary and sentence structure, in this workbook. They have provided a structured approach to building and reviewing large literacy skills in a daily, weekly and monthly format. This to me is wonderful, and simplifies my multi-tasking even more. It, additionally, provides weekly & monthly reviews - a great assessment tool. If funded, I plan to implement this daily language practice during our morning Word Skills sessions. Through mini-lessons, discussions, and Interactive Writing activities, I hope to expand and enhance my ELLs' writing skills and knowledge in the English language, while providing guided instruction for their eight major writing projects this year.
