Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Genetically modified, organic, 100% natural, artificial, gluten-free... these words are just some of the vocabulary one must understand and negotiate when food shopping and reading the labels in the grocery store. Please support my students in building awareness about healthy food choices.

My students attend a Title 1 high school in southern California.

Most of my students come from challenging economic situations where buying healthy food is not often an option. The cheaper, processed food and fast food items are affordable. The students often drink large energy drinks and eat snack food for lunch without understanding the long-term impact on their health. Given access to understanding the importance of health and nutrition (our school does not offer any classes in this content area), students will be empowered as consumers in the supermarket and can share their knowledge with their families.

My Project

We need seven digital cameras to work on a collaborative photographic investigation on food and nutrition in our Algebra class. Students will be able to use photography to start conversations, raise questions, and analyze results about food and nutrition with their own diet and the diet of their family members. As a local response to Time Magazine's "What the World Eats", my students will be able to visually document the food being consumed on a weekly basis- at home or for school lunch. The nutritional value along with the role of marketing in food products will be discussed. Cost of food production and market price will be analyzed along with the impact of organic and genetically modified. Issue of food ethics and the role of sustainable agriculture will be relevant political topics. If possible, a field trip to a local organic farm and educational center will reinforce the classroom experience and provide a community connection for the students.

Through photography, conversations, and math, my students will gain a deeper understanding of food and nutrition and how what they eat impacts their health and the health of the planet.

Please support my students in this project and empower them with the knowledge that comes through analyzing what is in the forkful of food they eat at each meal.
