Help Mrs. d.

In our elementary school, the first grade focuses on learning to read and the importance of understanding why we read. We work very hard, every day, on reading comprehension. We read to learn about new subjects, genres, and for entertainment. It helps for the first grade students to understand what and why they are reading in order to become life-long readers. When a child can comprehend what they have read the world around them starts to make more sense. They realize they have a lot to learn and reading is one of the best ways to find knowledge. The reading comprehension activity centers will be a great addition to the classroom and used nearly everyday. We have centers everyday and comprehension is one of the hardest ones to complete. The previously mentioned activity centers will provide strategies for comprehension in fun ways. The comprehension activity centers include strategies for main idea, fact and opinion, cause and effect, and story elements. These centers will be used throughout the year for individual, small group, and whole instruction. These activity centers will help make comprehension fun and they will help to reach children at different levels. As a child moves up a level, they will be able to choose more difficult activities in each comprehension area. I really would like my first grade students to have a firm grasp in comprehension. It is a difficult concept that can by eased through practice. These strategies and activities will help my first graders to broaden their ability to understand and encourage them to continue to read inside and outside of school. We comprehend at every age; in our careers and in our home lives. I would like to give these students a head start in bringing their understanding of the world around them into their everyday lives.
