What The Heck Is Math Doing In Science?

My students need 20 scientific calculators 3 sets of molecular models and 20 meter sticks! Special needs students in Chemistry and Physics have no books and no calculators right now.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach special needs students in inclusion science classrooms that lack basic materials (e.g., meter sticks, calculators, lab stuff) in an undeserved community. Calculators, measurement tools and lab materials (testing kits) would make it easier for students to understand and apply science.

Our school is highly diverse and a bit of contradiction.

Although there are many serious urban problems (poverty, violence, etc.), there is a lot of positive energy between students and teachers and a lot of love of learning that one might not expect at first glance. Our labs are either non-existent or old and lacking in equipment and there are not enough measurement tools or lab materials to go around (e.g., calculators, meter sticks, chem and bio kits). Many of my special needs students require calculators as a modification/support and having no access to them makes it unnecessarily hard for them to learn new material.

My Project

During my first day in physics class, I began to teach kinematics and a student yelled out "what the heck is this math doing here, I thought this was science class." Needless to say, there is a lack of background knowledge with my students that can be significantly improved by having regular access to calculators. We also need meter sticks for physics labs, chemistry model sets for chemistry students and simple testing materials for the biology lab which would allow students to test foods for the presence of different macromolecules. Biology students would benefit by understanding the needs of organisms and the relationship between chemistry and biology. Since the chemistry class does not have computers or books, the chemistry sets would be very helpful for "visualizing chemistry" and understanding chemical bonds. Physics students would be able to understand new concepts and apply new formulas faster by not having to calculate by hand.

Scientific school supplies are sort of luxury in poor districts-perhaps this is why fewer graduating scientists come from low income communities.

These items would allow students to understand how science applies to their lives. The metric sticks, calculators, chemistry models and macromolecule food testing would allow students to progress because these materials would make problem solving more efficient, allowing students to use hands on methods for learning science.
