This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine living in NYC but because you go to school in the Bronx, you only have a 70% chance of graduating High School? Now add to this the fact that you came to High School speaking a language other than English- and your chances of graduation get even smaller.

I teach at a High School in the heart of the Bronx helping students who are learning English become college-ready in Math and Science.

A lot of our students move quickly into learning English- even if they struggle with literacy in their home language. Although they enter our school with little limited English, we join them in their goal of graduating High School in just 4 years. They are hard-working and want to make a better future - for themselves, and our city.

My Project

Research has shown that after watching an accurate model, students are able to learn and answer questions with 85% accuracy! That is an incredible pace of learning but sometimes it is impossible to give an accurate model to a whole class. How do you show 30 students how to measure the major axis of an ellipse? How do you model drawing an ellipse with push pins and string for 30 students?

For this to be effective, you need a document camera!

In order for my students to be able to see and understand (which is essential for students who are learning English), they need a model on a document camera.

This camera will enable me to walk through annotating problems, labs, dissecting difficult questions and diagrams and so much more. My students will be able to make connections and learn without confusion because they have seen a model!
