Help Mrs. Henderson

I am the Science Lab teacher at Walnut Bend Elementary in Houston, Texas. Our urban school has about 825 students, 274 from New Orleans via the Katrina disaster. We moved to a new school facility on Dec. 16, 2005 and are starting over with our indoor and outdoor nature centers. The district would not let us transport our large aquariums because they were considered " built-in" items. We've had a strong Science program for the last 15 years and I want it to continue in our new location. About 70% of our students live in apartments and will never have the experience of growing edible plants in an aquaponic aquarium or watching insect/fish eggs hatch and the life cycle continue. The hydroponics activity unit that we have from NASA teaches about chemical nutrients and alternative growing processes that are being used with the International Space Station Program. We plan on using these aquariums for basic plant and animal study. Students keep journals on observations and chart growth. Hopefully this will spark an interest in future related professions. I have managed to save some of the supplies needed to complete these tanks and have over 800 excited and willing volunteers to help set it all up. This will be a wonderful learning environment for all students and their families.
