My Students

I have the privilege of teaching 60 ninth grade ESL students Government this year. My students come from Yemen, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Georgia just to name a few. They are sharp students who are eager to show me what they know and I make it a priority to harness that enthusiasm in each of my units. I teach at a high needs school in Coney Island, Brooklyn in Russian speaking community and many of these students rarely venture out and explore on their own. It is important for me to introduce concepts that they could relate to and more importantly that will encourage them to be lifelong independent learners.

My Project

In my 9th grade Government class my students will be exploring what the American Dream means for immigrants and citizens. They will make connections between themselves and notable immigrants like Alexander Hamilton. Furthermore, they will explore what the American Dream meant and still means for African Americans. It is my hope that they will draw connections between the two groups. The graphic novel March by John Lewis captures both the essence of the Civil Rights movement and also depicts beautifully the plight of African Americans in their pursuit of equality and freedom which are foundational elements of the American Dream.
