Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In this project, my Humanities teaching partner and I will focus on reading Victims on Both Ends of the Gun by Tina Schuster. This book will help students understand the impact of violence, forgiveness, and healing. This ties directly into the mission of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation, which is to create safer schools and communities by teaching principles like accountability, compassion, forgiveness, and peacemaking. Through this project, students will explore different themes in the book and focus on the importance of forgiving.

One aspect I love about my students is their openness to learning about complex emotional topics.

They have an incredible ability to reflect on their own actions and emotions, and this project will give them the tools to process feelings of shame, vulnerability, guilt, and forgiveness. The resources we are requesting, such as books, writing materials, and access to educational tools, will help students engage with these sensitive subjects in a structured and supportive environment.

Our goals for this project are to help students develop emotional intelligence and essential life skills, such as empathy and conflict resolution. Being able to forgive themselves and others will equip them to handle overwhelming emotions in difficult situations, whether with peers or in future relationships.

What makes my students unique is their resilience. By analyzing the events and characters in Victims on Both Ends of the Gun, and writing forgiveness letters, they will not only learn valuable literacy skills but also gain tools for healing and personal growth that will benefit them throughout their lives.
