What Is Computer Science Without Robots?

My students need 11 Edison robots to complete their robotics unit in our introductory computer science class. With these simple robots, we can learn how to utilize programming to make the robot perform different functions.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

HSHM is a high needs public NYC high school focused on preparing students in hospitality and tourism careers.

Our small school is comprised of around 400 students, many of whom commute long distances from their bilingual households and receive free or reduced lunch.

We have a large population of students who are classified as special education and/or ESL and work hard to support their needs.

Students often come into HSHM not having all the skills they need to be successful in high school. These students are supported through after school and Saturday tutoring and through the work of their very dedicated teachers and staff.

My Project

My introductory computer science course is intended to inspire creativity and foster a sense of inquiry for students who are particularly underrepresented in this field. The robotics unit is one way to achieve these goals.

Students need to be able to play, explore, and examine how robots work to fully understand the complexity and creativity within technology.

Students will be paired together to program robots and learn about how they use their sensors to perform specific outputs. The Edison robots are simple, easy for students to use, and do not require any prior robotic experience.

The Edison robots are supplemented with strong lesson plans, activities, and other resources to make complete lessons more engaging and equitable to all students. Because there are so many resources, teaching and learning are that much more supported and impactful.
