Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love learning! Whether it be Math, Science, Reading, and/or Art, they are all in! Some are loving the virtual situation and others, not so much.

My students are all doing the best they can and they have realized that distance learning is not easy, but they have accepted the challenge.

They know that they have to stay organized and distraction-free during our lessons. They know there is a schedule we must stick to. Most of all, they know school is not just for learning content, it is where they will learn to be responsible, empathetic, and empowered.

My Project

Today, my class completed a series of webinars hosted by Edwards Air Force Base and NASA. We learned about rewarding STEM Careers and my students experienced some science lessons that have piqued their curiosity. That is why I am asking that you help provide my students with experiences that will prepare them for a future in STEM. I am asking for a Snap Circuit kit to help them understand the basics of mechanical motion and electricity. The gliders (Delta Dart Classroom Pack) I am asking for will help with aeronautic and engineering instruction and the Properties of Light Kit will help my students understand how light travels. These are just some of the lessons I will be conducting with the items I have requested.

By teaching STEM lessons I will be providing the knowledge my students need but there is another hurdle to tackle.

Sadly, not all my students see themselves as future engineers, pilots, or aircraft designers. It isn't because they don't think these careers are exciting, it is because they think it is not possible for them. So what do they need? The girls and boys in my class need to see that there are people that look like them; with similar backgrounds as theirs. The answer to that problem is to provide role models that students can be inspired by. This is where the IF/THEN Collection falls into place. The diversity in the IF/THEN STEAM community is such that I have more than enough role models to choose from.

With your help, my students will not only gain knowledge, they will also develop the belief that they too can shoot for the stars.
