Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My current campus is a Title I school in one of the largest urban school districts in Texas. The campus currently has approximately 850 students enrolled in grades 1 through 5, one of the highest compared to other elementary campuses. Due to the location of the school, the campus serves a large Hispanic population. The majority of students and parents are Spanish-speaking with some students having bilingual proficiency. The campus is in year four as a newly reconfigured elementary campus, thus bringing a set of challenges. We also recently welcomed the new dual-language program at our campus - we are blessed to be one of the few elementary campuses to offer this amazing program.
Overall, my students are passionate about any project that they partake in.
The students are creative, loving, and always looking for books when they come to the library. School libraries equipped with certified librarians and updated resources and hands-on activities, in particular, are able to bridge the gap of economic inequality that currently exists today in the United States. As a result, the mission of the campus' library program focuses on these four critical areas: Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Creativity.
My Project
This school year, students are fully in-person, and as a result, keeping safe and being emotionally well is at the forefront of our campus' mind to ensure that students are successful. I am excited to start a new series of DonorsChoose projects designed to bring more library-bound books focusing on teaching about how our differences are our gifts.
This year also saw an increase of students needing guidance in interacting with peers and friends, so I am excited to seek out books that help students to be emotionally well and would help them in growing their social-emotional needs, including being self-confident.
I am seeking out graphic novels because a) my students always check out graphic novels and b) students are still developing their English skills - my campus is more than 85% English learners or part of the Dual Language Program.
I am excited to see the students' faces light up when this project is funded! Requesting library-bound books would ensure that these books can last years to come!
