This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you truly understood the difference between weather and climate? Maybe it was easier to understand because you had travel experience under your belt. My students rarely "get-outta-town" and haven't quite grabbed the concept of what climate is.

These 27 fifth graders are among curious students in a 60 year old building.

Many are new English learners and children with special needs. Actually, all have "special" needs...that is, the need to learn in an independent setting. I keep at it, trying to help them learn more about our earth every day.

My Project

I am requesting a SALLY RIDE SCIENCE CLASSROOM SET: CLIMATE CHANGE activity center so that students may work independently to pursue information about climates of our world. By sponsoring this proposal for our class, you will be opening up their eyes to the "ways of the world" by allowing them to read four sets of books (total 32) to explore the Poles, Ecosystems, Oceans and the Atmosphere. For example, presently, when you mention the poles, all they think about is Santa Claus, polar bears and penguins. Oceans bring to mind big waves and that's about it. For a while, they thought the atmosphere was truly visible layers. Finally, ecosystems, "What's that, Mrs. J?"
