My Students

Our day is jam-packed with learning from beginning to end! In our classroom, the First Graders are working hard to become readers. The smiles that come across their faces when they read a whole book is priceless! I hope to help develop that love of reading throughout the year.

My first graders have the potential to be anything they desire.

With engaging learning opportunities and motivating experiences that will boost their reading confidence, these students can more than exceed my expectations. One hundred percent of the students in our school are considered socioeconomically disadvantaged, and every student qualifies for free breakfast and lunch at school. About half of my students are English Language Learners, some coming from monolingual families. All of my students are working toward becoming independent readers. My goal is to allow all of my students to learn and practice the skills necessary to become confident and lifelong readers.

My Project

When students enter the first grade, they all come with different knowledge and skills. My goal is to identify each students' current abilities and teach them where they are! Gone will be the days of blindly selecting instructional and independent reading materials that I hope are "just right" for each student. With this assessment system, I will be able to identify students' instructional reading levels in order to provide lessons that will appropriately challenge students and allow them to grow as readers. I will also be able to guide students in selecting books for independent reading based on the independent reading levels discovered by the use of this benchmark assessment kit. The best part is that this kit comes with everything that any teacher would need to provide a full evaluation of students' reading abilities and needs! It would remove the element of uncertainty when working to plan engaging lessons that would help readers achieve their maximum potential!

Donations to provide my students with the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System will allow me to deliver the personalized reading instruction that they all deserve!

Students will gain confidence as readers during our small-group instructional sessions based on instructional reading levels, and they will gain a love of reading because they will be able to choose "just right" books for independent reading.
