Help Mrs. Nolen

I teach students with learning disabilities ranging from severe non-readers to mild/moderate. the middle school where I teach has more than 90% on free and reduced lunch. The students are 6, 7, and 8th graders. We are in a rural area and are part of a close knit but poor community.

It is very difficult to interest the students in writing because it is a very frustrating task. That is why I begin with writing in a journal and then poetry. As a journal assignment, the students were asked to write about one way they could help their school. 80% of the students commented that they noticed that teachers didn't have enough supplies. One student even said one teacher needed something to decorate his room because it was not very bright. As we began to write poetry a few students thought it would be a good idea to make something and sell it then use the money to help the teacher decorate his room. As the discussion continued they decided that since they had to write poetry, why not make a book out of their poetry and sell their book to families, friends and other teachers to raise money. I pointed out all of the editing and rewriting they would have to do to make a good book and they didn't see that as the obstacle: they are willing to do the work.

The obstacle is publishing the book. Students need a printer, a binding system and extra ink to publish their book. We do not have any way to bind our books. And we need a printer for our class use that prints in color. I am very impressed with this project because these students do not like to write and many have to be read to for comprehension, but the motivation to help someone else is inspiring them to overcome their difficulties to help their school community. This project will also help them prepare for the writing test they have to pass to graduate from high school--but I didn't tell them that part!

You, the donor, can have a tremendous impact on my students through your generous support. When our projects are funded, the students are impressed that someone who doesn't even know them, cares enough to donate. Please continue to be supportive so my students can understand that it takes more than a village, it takes everyone. I want them to learn to give back to their community. Help them complete their effort to give.
