Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a long time educator but a first-year GeoScience teacher for tenth graders. We are a Title I school and my students come from a wide range of backgrounds that can involve stressful circumstances. My students work hard and they love to explore and learn. Geoscience provides hands-on activities that engross students, allowing them to dive into each lesson with realistic perspectives and outcomes.

As teachers, we have to realize that some of the stresses from home come to school.

Tenth grade is a pivotal time for high schoolers to gain confidence and communication skills that lead into young adulthood. Covid has created a huge gap in social and educational experiences that interactive lessons and field trips can help to heal by promoting more conversation, interaction, and physical involvement with others.

My Project

Field trips are extremely necessary, especially since students have been somewhat confined due to COVID. The social and learning benefits of our Whale Watching trip includes venturing together and witnessing sea life in real time. I am requesting stones and paint pens and equipment to print tee shirts and masks for our Whale Watching trip.

The t-shirts and masks will allow our group to stand out as a school and also keep us safe.

We plan to paint stones that will act as keepsakes for students.

The following standards are addressed during our field trip:

Science ESS3.A Natural Resources - allows students to build a commitment to caring for plant and animal life as they take an active role in tying together the many aspects of how ocean life contributes to our existence.

Science ESS2.E Biogeology - students experience how sea life and human life co-evolve and the dynamics that are both similar and different in the way we function.

Science ESS2.A Earth Materials and Systems - participants will have a chance to feel currents and ocean movement that impacts both sea life and human experiences.

Celebrate Black teachers and kids! This project supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of students are Black.
