We've got the information (our library holdings have been entered into an automated database) but now students need to access the records. Students need to access and print reference resources for school reports, and to access the public library website. We need "media" in our library-media program!
Our public school is comprised of 400+ city kids, Kindergarten-5th grade, who don't have computer access at home, in many cases.
Many are English-language learners (42%) and are from socio-economically disadvantaged households (44%). The school library may be the only resource available to meet their information needs.
My Project
We are grateful for the one computer we have in the school library (for the use of over 400 students served weekly), but we are in need of at least one more. We have used the one computer to enter library collection information into the district maintained database, and that computer will continue to be used at the circulation desk to check books in and out and to maintain circulation records. We need a second computer for students to search the database to locate resources in the school library collection. In addition, we need a printer to print search results for student reference queries.
Can you imagine going into the public library and not having a computer available to search the catalog?
Can you imagine researching a topic and not having the option to print the results? We need a computer and printer for our students who rely on the school library for their information needs, but whose needs are not being met because of the lack of technology support. We've got the information, but we don't have the information technology. Please help us enter the 21st century.
