This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Coby is an 8th-grade student who is very involved in his school and community. For the past several years Coby has participated in the schools cross country team, volleyball team, basketball team and is a bass player in our schools' drumline.

Coby is the President of the DFYIT Club-Peer Counselors and of Castaway Club which is an outdoor club established this school year upon his relentless request to have a fishing club. Last school year Coby won an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC through the Do The Right Thing Program-Miami Dade Police Department for his commitment to his community and ability to keep his school safe.

Through the DFYIT Club and the Drumline Coby has volunteered countless hours in the community. At school, he has done over 75 classroom presentations yearly on a variety of topics ranging from depression, acceptance, suicide awareness, bullying prevention, Sandy Hook Say Somehitng, drugs, alcohol, and autism just to name a few. He has participated in numerous community events like Live Like Bella, Cystic Fibrosis Walk, Out of Darkness Walk (Suicide prevention), Autism Walk and many more. He has also volunteered at Paws 2 Care and The Village South.

This camping trip is 100% student lead and planned. The members of Castaway Club are responsible for finding a location, planning the meals, activities, and cost of the entire trip. While planning this trip they will use their research skills which will come in handy in all aspects of life including school. They will learn how to do a meal budget plan using their math skills and create an itinerary of planned events at the park for the entire group to follow. The social-emotional component will commence in the planning stages of this project as they must all decide on the location what meals will be prepared, how much of each item is needed, and what activities will they participate in together. The most rewarding part will be the time they share together outdoors disconnected from the cyber world and enjoying the simple pleasures of nature. Hiking, fishing, riding bikes and the amazing nights under the stars roasting marshmallows.

In Their Own Words

My friends and I really like the outdoors. Many of them have never been camping. We would like to experience this together. We've had an awesome time fishing together, we want to finish the school year on a camping trip. Not many kids can say we went camping in middle school.

I found a park Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park which would allow us to camp there for FREE as long as we do a community service project while we are there, like a beach clean-up. This is something we've done before on our own to help other beaches/parks. So incorporating a community service project to our trip is perfect because we also love to give back and preserve our parks for future Castaway members to enjoy.

This is the first year that HGMS has a Castaway Club. Most clubs are about technology and many of my classmates have forgotten that there is a WORLD "Outdoors" to enjoy. When others see what we did they will want to join this club and participate in outdoor activities too. So we're leading the way for others by showing and sharing the experiences we had and will have during our camping trips. Maybe we'll call our trip "Disconnect to Connect".
