My Project

We study the Westward Expansion as part of our curriculum in my second grade classroom. We learn about Native Americans, the buffalo on the plains, pioneers, and conclude our unit with famous legend stories of Johnny Appleseed & John Henry. We study important topic specific vocabulary such as prairies, frontier, covered wagons, tribes, and nomadic. We currently have some of these books in our classroom, but not enough books for each student.

Please help us expand our Westward Expansion book collection so that each student will have a book in their hands.

We will read these books several times and discuss important themes throughout our unit. The students will also be writing a lot of informative paragraphs about the Westward Expansion. Having enough copies of each title will assure that each student can work with their own copy. They can learn to look for text evidence while writing their paragraphs. They can also read the books on their own and pause to enjoy the rich illustrations.
