I am requesting 25 copies of a novelization of Westside Story. 9th graders typically read Romeo and Juliet as part of their curriculum. I want to provide them with a unique experience that will be engaging and meaningful to their lives. This book is a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet. My goal with this unit is to teach speaking and listening skills so that they can communicate effectively and advocate for themselves.
"West Side Story" provides a powerful platform to discuss social issues like racial prejudice, gang violence, immigration, and the destructive nature of hatred, all while being presented through a captivating narrative, making it a relevant and engaging way to explore complex themes with students.
9th grade students will participate in collaborative conversations and Socratic Seminars to process this novel. They will also have exposure to Romeo and Juliet. We previously read a book called If You Come Softly which is another retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Having this experience will allow students to understand the universal themes that exist in Shakespeare's plays.
