My Students

Take a moment to remember all of the struggles you faced in high school - academic, social, personal - and now imagine going through all of that in a language you were not yet fluent in. When I consider this prospect, I am truly inspired by the English Language Learners (ELL) at our school in Brooklyn, New York, who approach school each day with enthusiasm despite this obstacle.

Our ELL program includes students from a dozen different countries, from Haiti to China, Yemen to El Salvador, all of whom bring rich voices and experiences to class each day.

We believe in a truly inclusive environment where language is learned socially, so with the exception of English as a New Language class, our students are working side-by-side with the other 600 students at the school.

Teachers work together to meet their diverse needs so that no ELL student gets lost in the shuffle. Once they know their voices matter to our community, the stories and experiences they contribute to the classroom are invaluable.

My Project

I was able to see the new adaptation of West Side Story on Broadway a few weeks ago and decided that it was really important for my English as a New Language students to be able to see this show. Not only is the script a classic reflection on immigration and xenophobia, both relevant to all of my students, but this semester our 11th-graders have been working with Atlantic Theater Company on adapting this story in their own writing.

In watching the current production of West Side Story, my students will see themselves reflected on the stage with a multiracial cast with talented actors as young as 18 years old.

Many of them will see their own neighborhood, Sunset Park, projected as a backdrop for much of the show. I have never seen a broadway show as relevant and timely to my students as this production.

We will spend the last month of the school year looking at how the classic work of Romeo and Juliet has been revised and adapted in West Side Story through an in-depth analysis of scenes across scripts, productions, and media. Students will choose a scene of their own to adapt from 1950s New York to the present day. We can conclude the school year by seeing how these same choices have been made by the director and choreographer of the current production.
