My Students

"I just know" used to be the most common response I got when I asked my kids how they got their answer...not anymore! I've found an effective method for my kids to get them thinking about their thinking, and with your help I can continue to provide them with opportunities to express themselves!

I teach 18 wonderful, energetic third graders at a rural Kentucky school!

We are in a small district with only three small schools where much of the faculty (myself included) are former students! The faculty and students have tons of school spirit! Third graders are so much fun! I love their willingness to learn! They love hands-on activities and educational games! My boys and girls this year are creative! They love telling stories and doing arts and crafts, and I have several little aspiring artists! I saw early on that I had to address a weakness in problem solving and expressing their thoughts where math is concerned. I wanted to incorporate some of those things they love into my instruction. My solution was math journals. This year I began creating monthly math journals for each student and they love them! They love having a journal all their own! We can't stop using them now, and I wouldn't dream of it!

My Project

The binding machine and comb bindings I'm requesting for my classroom will enable me to make proper, longer lasting math journals. Due to a lack of resources our math journals are currently just pages stapled together. But with these resources, we will have no more missing (or poking) staples and lost pages! The pencils, colorful pens, and highlighters I'm requesting are important basic supplies that many of my students don't have. By providing them with these basic supplies they can continue learning worry free! The highlighters and pens will be used to mark key words and information in problems, helping the kids focus their thoughts to solve problems. My students love making their journals their own, and I love that they are an instructional tool combining math and writing! They especially love using 3-d graphic organizers (foldables) and color in their journals!

If you fall behind in math, it is so hard to catch up.

We use our journals to review concepts from earlier in the year nearly every day. The students are doing math and writing about math nearly every day. With your help we can continue reviewing, learning more, and writing in our math class! A binding machine and comb bindings will make journals my kids will love and they can fill them with their thoughts using the pencils, pens, and highlighters I have asked for. Help me make math fun!
