This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Wow! I never dreamed that my kids would dig the recorder this much! After spending the last 3 months of the school year with just 30 recorders for 200 enthusiastic kids, I realized that this could turn into something great! Now I want to provide them each with a recorder to use the whole year.

I'm very excited about this school year.

I have a wonderful group of mostly Hispanic (about 96%) kids who live in a very low socioeconomic status area. Our school is old, but we make the most of it, and with a new principal this year, everyone is pumped up! I'd like to show the older kids how much we care by finding a way to provide recorders for them all to play, rather than asking them to come up with the money themselves, especially since many of them can't afford it. I don't want any child to miss out on an opportunity simply because they can't pay as little as $3.

My Project

These recorders are BLUE! I have visions of a whole squad of students on the stage playing cool blue recorders, accompanied by drums (see my other project) and other instruments. Oh, so cool! And everyone will want to play one...and my younger students will be asking when they get to play! As for what they'll learn: of course they'll be reading music and playing, and as they get more advanced,they'll start composing their own pieces, which of course is one of the highest orders of thinking. In composing, the kids will develop a solid understanding of fractions (quarter note, half rest, etc.) and their listening skills. They can critique their own and others' playing and compositions.

Imagine never having the opportunity to play an instrument, or growing up thinking you have no musical talent.

In fact, you may be reading this thinking "yep, that's me!" I don't believe anyone is musically inept. I believe that if you think that, then you just haven't found your instrument yet. The recorder is so easy to play, and it may be the one thing that an underachieving student needs in order to feel successful. Please help us out by making my dream for them a reality.
