Help my class provide holiday happiness!!! I teach a middle school special education class in Brooklyn, New York. It is classified as mentally retarded or handicapped but some of my students have other challenges, including autistic-like behaviors and hearing impairments.

My students live in a "give me" world and are not not exceptions to this sentiment, however, my students also enjoy doing things for others- they absolutely beam when thanked for something they have done for others. Unfortunately these situations do not present themselves as often as I would like to see them occur.

Giving happiness to children who are in the hospital during the December holidays is a project for my students to make and give presents to others. This project is multi-faceted. My students come out of it having happiness too. They'll also work on fine motor skills, following directions, working cooperatively as well as learning new techniques in arts and crafts. They'll make keepsake boxes out of craft sticks, paint sun catchers, design backpacks, and tie dye t-shirts. You may have noticed that t-shirts are not on the list of needed supplies. Having done this before, I ask parents to send in 2 new t-shirts for tie-dyeing. This way, students can work on their two shirts-that give one away and have one to keep shows their new and unique skills. This project also makes wonderful memories and builds egos, especially when they take the presents to the children's ward of the nearest hospital and see those children and their parents smile.

As you read about my project, I hope you'll realize how YOUR help can help my students bring happiness to others and themselves and how it fosters the types of social interaction and esteem building that is so needed. You'll see the pictures of the class in action, using the materials you've donated. Fulfilling what's needed for this project will also bring you happiness!
