My Students

When was the last time you watched as the beliefs of an ancient and dead civilization were brought to life in a middle-schooler's eyes? Thanks to Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series, I have seen this miracle happen in my very own classroom!

I have a lively bunch of 6th graders in a small K-8 school in the Bronx.

Since there is only one class per grade, my students have been able to get to know each other quite well over the past couple of years. Each year becomes a challenge in engaging these inquisitive minds with new units, books, routines, and projects that can capture their attention and reawaken their imaginations! Yet they are such a curious and fun-loving group of students, that taking on this challenge is actually rather enjoyable. My students come from various parts of the world -- bringing a vast array of perspectives and cultural differences that enhance our classroom's ability to learn about tolerance and understanding. They are always open to new ideas, and excited to see things from another's point of view. Even though our school's resources are limited, we make the best of what we have, and make use of our books to carry us away to far off places whenever we can!

My Project

Our first unit of the year in Reading and Writing is about a hero's journey. And what better way to introduce students to amazing heroic exploits than by teaching them about Greek mythology? We have invited Percy Jackson to take us into his world and show us what a true hero must do when battling monsters and making his way through an overwhelming quest. My students love him! Boys and girls alike cannot put down these books! Unfortunately, we only have a lovingly-worn out class set of the first novel in the Percy Jackson series. Thus, as soon as we are finished, they are thirsting for more. That is why I would like to have multiple copies of the rest of the series -- so my students can continue to share in Percy's journey, learning about his many adventures, and enjoying the tales of Greek and Roman mythology as their imaginations run wild. I know that they would spend countless hours reading through this series and devouring every page with their partners and in small groups.

It can be quite a challenge to spark interest in books among middle schoolers.

I suppose it's because it is sometimes difficult for them to see interesting characters, much like themselves, in unfamiliar settings, doing extraordinary things. But I know that making this donation to my amazing students will have them reading all year! While reading the first novel in this series sparks an interest, I want to do so much more than light a spark: I want to start an all-out reading fire in my class!
