My Students

I teach in an urban school with high poverty (90+ percent receive free/reduced lunch) and a population that includes more than 25% English Language Learners.

Most of our ELLs (English Language Learners) came to the United States as refugees from countries like Burma, Bhutan, Iraq, and Somalia.

The culture of our school encourages students to be active participants in their own education. Although we have challenges to overcome, there is always a positive and open attitude toward learning in our school.

My Project

Mrs. H and I want to improve our students' reading skills! We have begun the year by assessing each student's reading level and will work to gradually move students up level by level throughout the year. Now that we know each student's reading level we've come upon a problem: we don't have enough books at the proper levels for the students to read!

As fourth grade teachers, we are stocked with books at the fourth grade reading level but many students are currently reading at lower levels.

By providing books at each student's actual reading level, they will be able to build stamina and improve their reading skills. This way they will progressively climb to higher and higher levels, which will benefit them across all academic areas.
