My Students

Our school library strives to meet the needs and interests of our student body--a melting pot of ethnicity, culture, language, academic level, orientation, economic status--by providing students with books they can relate to or that move them.

As a semi-urban school in the outskirts of a major metropolitan area in Washington State, we reflect a microcosm of the world around us.

We have a high poverty rate with around 60% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Represented are more than a dozen languages and cultures, from Somalia to Mexico, Albania to Vietnam, we welcome immigrants and "locals" alike. The diversity in cultures is matched by our diverse academic needs ranging from IB diploma seekers to those who need support with reading, math or science.

My Project

One of the things that librarians are always on the look-out for are gaps in their collection. Although our library has a few novels by such noted LGBTQ writers as Alex Sanchez, there isn't much variety to speak to the diverseness of identities represented by the LGBTQ community. Older novels usually deal with older issues that today's student might find less than appealing or not relevant to his/her realities.

I want our LGBTQ novels and non-fiction to cover more than just lesbian and gay "issues" but to represent a spectrum of identities and realities--from transgender to curious to gender fluid to intersex--and not just about "issues," but about people who go through life, and learn and grow from their experiences.

It is by reading we can discover things about ourselves, learn about our world when we cannot "get out" into it, and be challenged by other people's ideas or ways of viewing the world.

Our LGBTQ students deserve to have books that provide them with examples, whether factual or fictional, of their lives and identities--characters who speak to them because they ARE them. There is no better "teacher" than a book one can relate with and that reflects or represents their own life experiences.
