This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a public school located in the heart of a community which is also a low-income area in a large city in Florida. Because of this, students lack access to various resources. 30% of the students we service live in shelters. We are a Title I school which means ninety-eight percent of students qualify for free-reduced lunch which shows there need for access to resources. We are in a large urban area with 533 students.

Our school serves students from eight different homeless shelters and drug-rehab facilities.

Thirty-nine percent of our students are English Language Learners. Like most children, our students are curious, eager to learn new things, and open to new experiences. Unfortunately, their economic situations do not always allow them the opportunities afforded to other students.

My Project

There is never enough resources and supplies to give to a student in need. Being located in the heart of Miami specifically Wynwood, has shown me how much is really required of me as a teacher. Our enrollments include a wide range of students from surrounding shelters. With everything that is going on, they should never be forgotten.

A lot of them are restless, hungry, struggle with strong odors and some even come without supplies.

It is my duty as an educator to make sure everyone is as comfortable as possible in our learning environment. With your help, this can be done. The items requested will be provided to students that have been identified as "homeless/in need". It is my desire to ensure that they feel a part of not a classroom, but a family. A family that is concerned and willing to provide their every need. Deodorant when they missed a shower, or a snack before dismissal to ensure they are filled will go a long way. With this project, I hope to rehabilitate my students back to their own normality.
