My Students

"If you can dream it, you can do it." - Walt Disney. My students have great dreams of greatness, and I want to use literacy listening skills to help them achieve their dreams.

My Third Grade students attend a small, rural K-8 school in Eastern North Carolina.

A majority of the school receive free and reduced lunch. At the beginning of the year, their enthusiasm for learning and achieving is bubbling over. As the year progresses, and assessments and standardized testing kick in, they lose their love for learning. The testing and level of pressure combined cause the students to lose interest and hope in their own future. They want to succeed, but I am lacking some tools that I need to make their dreams come true. These students are loving, intelligent, and inspirational. I want to give them the accompanying confidence that will give them that extra boost!

My Project

My students need a listening center with headphones and two sets of listening center read-along books with cds to promote literacy. I have asked for a four person listening center and two sets of books with cd's for my classroom. My students will be able to use these as a great method for reading together without suffering the embarrassment of being unable to read certain words, or reading more slowly than their peers. They will be sharing books together, and will be able to discuss and reflect on literature together, regardless of their reading abilities. They will also learn the valuable trait of listening, which is essential for success in today's society. Their increased reading, listening, and social abilities are but a small ray of hope in comparison to the self esteem growth that could occur in the lives of these kids.

The donations could lead some readers to become lifelong learners and lovers of books. The impact of this project is endless, and could impact the attitude of some learners during this critical time of change. Instead of giving up at the sight of testing and assessment, this learning tool could help them find their true ability and potential. It is a road to success for so many learners in my classroom!
