My Students

Anne Frank said, "Isn't it wonderful that one need not wait a single moment to start improving the world?" My students need supplies to start making our school a more sustainable part of the community. We want to add worm composting to our garden and start recycling our paper waste.

Our elementary school is a Title I school in the center of Sacramento and amidst several apartment buildings.

Our students want to help make the school a hub of the community, and I think that starting a recycling center across grade levels and composting for a garden that we are starting to beautify the school grounds will help give students a sense of accomplishment and belonging. This will, in turn, cut down on some of the anti-social behaviors present on our school grounds. With our school's economic demographics, students often don't see a garden grow during these formative years. With recycling paper, bottles and cans, students can feel connected to the community and the Earth. Empathy and belonging is sorely needed by the kids at our school. If we have success, we would love to go to other schools in our district and share our learning experiences with them, too.

My Project

The resources I requested include an overview learning module regarding the disposal of trash, a worm composting bin to go out by our garden, and hand gloves and a cart to collect recyclables from classrooms. We plan to work with our county's waste management department to deliver all recyclables: paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and, if possible, composting scraps from our cafeteria.

Our program is important because our district on the whole sends so much paper to landfills.

We need to start small and hopefully will branch out to other schools in the district. Our students could really use a project to build both pride in their community and a sense of accomplishment. I believe with this pride and through working together, some of our students' more anti-social behaviors may decrease as students find a sense of belonging.
