My Students

Cutting! Gluing! Painting! Creating! It's the kind of good, old-fashioned fun that 4-year-old's adore. They get to make messes with a purpose and that's the perfect combination to promote language development and build vocabulary, especially in the areas of social studies and science.

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-olds motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. I've found that arts and crafts projects present a comfortable setting for all of my young learners to succeed in presenting and sharing their ideas. A child can use the materials to create what is in his mind. This personal project then becomes a bridge to language that allows him to express his ideas verbally. An added benefit is the noticeable boost in confidence and self-esteem that comes with such achievement.

My Project

The thematic collage kits will enrich some of my students' favorite units: Insects, Ocean Life, and The Farm. Their individual projects will be the motivation for vocabulary development and creative oral language. The children will practice decision-making, planning, organizing, and producing personal works of art. Pom poms, collage flowers & leaves, glitter stars, collage shapes, fancy pipe stems, and yarn laces with tips can be used to embellish the kits or in other types of art projects. The variety of textures, sizes, colors, and shapes will enhance descriptive language and promote original thinking. The glitter paints, spin art center, big barrel of sponges, and construction paper will inspire some innovative painting experiences to liven things up! While my students enjoy familiar favorites such as painting on easels or with fingers, they welcome new ways to exercise their creativity.

Arts and crafts activities present rich opportunities for my young learners to show what they know in creative, personalized ways.

They also open the door for vocabulary building and oral language development. While they cut, glue, paint, and create, their academic skills grow as their confidence and self-esteem blossom!
